This is a common, low-risk check most people can do safely. Always unplug the appliance (or isolate power) before touching internal parts.
A loud, rhythmic banging during the spin cycle is nearly always the drum hitting the outer casing because the load has become unevenly distributed — not a mechanical fault. This gets more common as a machine ages and the shock absorbers wear slightly, making it more sensitive to unbalanced loads.
What to check first
- Pause the machine and redistribute the load evenly around the drum, especially with single heavy items like a duvet, towels, or trainers.
- Check the four adjustable feet are all making firm contact with the floor and the machine doesn’t rock when pushed — an unlevel machine amplifies drum movement into the casing.
- If you’ve just had the machine delivered, check the transit bolts (the bolts that lock the drum for transport) have actually been removed from the back panel — leaving these in is a very common fitting mistake and causes exactly this banging.
- Avoid washing single bulky items (one duvet, one pair of trainers) alone — pair them with a few towels to balance the load.
When to call an engineer
If the load is balanced, feet are level, transit bolts are out, and it still bangs violently on every spin, the drum bearings or suspension springs/shock absorbers may have failed. This is a heavier repair job (bearings especially) and worth a professional assessment, since on some machines a bearing replacement costs close to the price of a new machine.
