An E17 or F17 error on a Bosch or Siemens washing machine means the machine hasn’t detected enough water coming in within its expected time — almost always a water supply problem rather than a machine fault.
What to check first
- Check the tap supplying the machine is fully open.
- Unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine (tap off first) and check the small mesh filter inside the connection for a build-up of grit or limescale — this is the single most common cause.
- Check the hose isn’t kinked or trapped behind the machine.
- Check your home’s water pressure is reasonable — Bosch’s own guidance notes this fault can trigger if incoming pressure is below roughly 1 bar, which can happen briefly during high local demand (e.g. peak morning hours).
When to call an engineer
If the tap, filter and hose are all fine and pressure elsewhere in the house is normal, the water inlet valve (the electronic solenoid valve that lets water into the machine) has likely failed — a routine, inexpensive part for an engineer to replace.
