Microwave display or buttons not responding (Samsung & Panasonic)

✅ Safe to check yourself

This is a common, low-risk check most people can do safely. Always unplug the appliance (or isolate power) before touching internal parts.

Quick TipTake a photo of the appliance's model/serial number sticker now — you'll want it if this does end up needing a part or an engineer.

A microwave with a blank display or unresponsive touch buttons, but that otherwise seems to have power (an internal light stays on, or a clock was working until recently), often has a simple cause worth checking before assuming the control panel has failed.

What to check first

  1. Check the socket with another appliance and check the plug fuse, exactly as with any other kitchen appliance — a blown fuse is a common, easily-checked cause.
  2. Check the child lock hasn’t been accidentally activated — this varies by model but often involves holding a specific button for a few seconds, and can make the panel seem completely dead to normal button presses.
  3. If it’s a touch-button (rather than physical button) model, check the panel for grease or moisture film, which can sometimes stop capacitive touch buttons registering properly — clean gently with a barely damp cloth while unplugged.
  4. Try unplugging for a full 60 seconds (not just switching off at the wall instantly) to allow any internal charge to fully discharge and the control board to reset.

When to call an engineer

If the fuse, child lock, and a clean/reset don’t restore it, the control board or touch panel has likely failed — given the internal high-voltage capacitor risk in microwaves even when unplugged, this is one to leave to a qualified engineer rather than opening the casing yourself.
