American-style fridge freezer ice maker or water dispenser not working (Samsung & LG)
✅ Safe to check yourself
This is a common, low-risk check most people can do safely. Always unplug the appliance (or isolate power) before touching internal parts.
Ice makers and water dispensers on American-style fridge freezers rely on a dedicated mains water connection, separate from the fridge’s cooling function entirely — so a dispenser fault very often has nothing to do with the fridge’s temperature performance at all.
What to check first
- Check the water supply valve feeding the fridge (usually under the sink or where a dedicated line taps into the mains, sometimes with an isolation valve fitted specifically for the fridge) is fully open.
- Check the water filter cartridge (most models have one, typically inside the fridge compartment or behind the base grille) isn’t overdue for replacement — a severely clogged filter can restrict or stop flow entirely, and manufacturers typically recommend replacement every 6 months.
- Check the water line behind the fridge isn’t kinked, especially if the fridge has been moved recently for cleaning.
- For ice makers specifically, check the ice maker’s own on/off switch or arm (inside the freezer compartment) hasn’t been accidentally switched off or lifted.
When to call an engineer
If supply, filter, and the ice maker’s own switch are all fine but nothing dispenses, the inlet valve for the dispenser system specifically (separate from the fridge’s main water valve, on models with both) may have failed — a routine part for an engineer to replace.
