A microwave door that won’t open is one of the more stressful-feeling faults simply because it can trap food inside, but the cause is very often a simple mechanical catch issue rather than anything electrical.
What to check first
- Check the door release button or handle mechanism for anything visibly jammed — on button-release models, a small amount of food debris or grease around the button can sometimes stop it depressing fully.
- Try pressing firmly and evenly rather than at an angle — on some models the latch can catch if pressure isn’t applied squarely.
- Check whether the microwave still otherwise operates normally (display, buttons work) — if so, this is very likely purely a mechanical latch issue, not an electrical fault.
- Avoid forcing the door with excessive strength, which risks damaging the latch mechanism or door hinge further and making a simple fix more complicated.
When to call an engineer
If gentle, even pressure on a clean release mechanism doesn’t open the door, the latch spring or catch assembly has likely failed or become misaligned — a routine, inexpensive part for an engineer to replace, though given the trapped-door situation this is often worth an urgent call rather than extended troubleshooting.
