Combination microwaves add a grill element and sometimes a convection fan alongside standard microwave heating, and food not browning properly is usually about mode selection and positioning rather than the grill element having failed.
What to check first
- Confirm you’ve actually selected a combination or grill-specific mode rather than plain microwave mode — it’s easy to select the wrong function, especially on models with dial-based rather than clearly labelled digital controls.
- Check food is positioned close enough to the grill element (usually mounted at the top) — many combi microwaves need food raised on the supplied high rack to brown properly, rather than sitting flat on the turntable, which may be too far from the element.
- Preheat if your model and recipe suggest it — some combi functions benefit from a brief preheat before adding food, similar to a conventional oven grill.
- Check the grill element itself (usually visible at the top of the cavity) glows visibly when the grill function is running — if you can safely see it’s not glowing at all when it should be, that points to element failure rather than a positioning issue.
When to call an engineer
If mode selection and food positioning are correct but the grill element visibly isn’t heating (no glow, no browning at all even directly underneath it), the element or its control relay has failed — this needs a qualified engineer given the internal high-voltage components in any microwave appliance.
