Fridge freezer door won’t stay closed or keeps swinging open (all brands)

A fridge or freezer door that won’t stay shut, or gradually swings open on its own, is usually about levelling or the door seal rather than the hinges themselves failing.

What to check first

1. Check the appliance is level — most fridge freezers have adjustable front feet specifically because a fridge is designed to lean back very slightly, which helps the door swing shut and stay closed under its own weight; if it’s tilted the wrong way (leaning forward), doors can swing open instead.
2. Use a spirit level across the top of the appliance, front to back, and adjust the front feet until it leans back very slightly, per your manual’s guidance.
3. Check the door seal (rubber gasket) for damage, perishing, or a build-up of debris preventing a full seal — a seal that isn’t gripping properly can let a door swing looser than it should.
4. Check nothing inside the door shelves is overloaded unevenly, which can affect how the door hangs.

When to call an engineer

If levelling and the door seal are both fine but the door still won’t stay shut, the hinges themselves may have worn or loosened — worth a professional check, or in some cases a straightforward DIY hinge tightening if you’re comfortable doing so, per your model’s manual.
