A rattle from a cooker hood is almost always something loose in or around the fan housing rather than the motor itself failing — worth a quick check before assuming the worst.
What to check first
- Check the metal grease filters are seated and clipped in correctly — a filter that’s slightly loose or sitting at an angle is one of the most common causes of a rattle, especially at higher fan speeds.
- Check the mounting screws or brackets fixing the hood to the wall/cabinet above haven’t loosened over time — hoods vibrate slightly during normal use and can work fixings loose over months or years.
- For ducted hoods, check the ducting itself isn’t loose where it connects to the hood or vents outside — a loose duct joint can rattle or whistle, especially on higher fan speeds or in windy weather if it vents externally.
- Check nothing has been placed on top of the hood (a common storage habit above kitchen units) that could be vibrating against the casing.
When to call an engineer
If filters, mounting, and ducting are all secure and the rattle is coming from inside the fan housing itself, a fan blade may have become slightly unbalanced or a bearing may be wearing — worth a professional check, particularly if the rattle is getting worse over time.
