- Check the water tank is fully and correctly seated — a tank that’s slightly loose in its housing is one of the most common causes of a rattle, since it vibrates against the casing as the compressor and fan run.
- Check the unit is standing on a level, stable surface and isn’t touching a wall, cabinet, or curtain that could vibrate against it.
- Check the air filter and any front grille are clipped in fully, not sitting loose.
- Move the unit slightly and see if the noise changes — this helps narrow down whether it’s genuinely coming from inside the unit or from something external vibrating against it.
When to call an engineer
If the tank, filter, and grille are all secure and the unit isn’t touching anything nearby, but the rattle persists — especially if it’s coming from deeper inside the casing — the compressor mounting or fan blade may be the cause, and this is worth a professional check rather than continued use.
