A dishwasher door that won’t latch, feels loose, or springs back open usually comes down to loading or the door mechanism’s spring tension rather than anything electrical.
What to check first
- Check nothing in the top rack is protruding and catching on the door or its seal — an oversized item pushed too far back is a very common cause.
- Check the door seal (the rubber gasket around the door frame) for a build-up of food debris or grease preventing a full, flush close.
- Check the door springs/counterbalance mechanism (usually visible at the sides of the door when open) — over years of use these springs can weaken, making the door feel heavy to close or not stay shut firmly.
- Check the latch/catch mechanism itself for visible wear or a build-up of grime preventing it engaging fully.
When to call an engineer
If loading and cleaning don’t resolve it, worn door springs or a failing latch assembly are routine, inexpensive parts for an engineer to replace, though accessing the spring mechanism usually means partially removing the door.
