What to check first
- Confirm you’ve replaced the carbon/charcoal filter specifically, not just cleaned the metal grease filter — these are separate components on recirculating models, and only the carbon filter actually absorbs odours; the metal filter just catches grease.
- Check you’re using the correct fan speed — higher settings pass more air through the carbon filter per minute, improving odour capture, especially for strong-smelling cooking.
- Check the carbon filter is seated correctly and fully covering the airflow path, not just loosely placed.
Setting realistic expectations
Recirculating hoods are inherently less effective at removing strong cooking odours (frying fish, curry spices) than ducted hoods that vent air outside entirely, simply because carbon filtration reduces rather than eliminates smell compounds, and the filtered air still carries residual heat and moisture back into the room. If odour control is a high priority and your kitchen layout allows it, converting to a ducted system is a genuine upgrade path worth discussing with an installer, rather than a fault with your current recirculating unit.
When to call an engineer
If a fresh carbon filter and correct fan speed still show no improvement at all (rather than a modest one), the fan itself may be underperforming — worth a professional check.
