Gradually weakening suction is one of the most common vacuum cleaner complaints, and almost always comes down to something blocking or restricting airflow somewhere along the path from nozzle to motor — not the motor itself losing power.

What to check first

  1. Empty the dust bin or replace the bag if it’s more than about two-thirds full — a full bin restricts airflow well before it looks “full” to the eye.
  2. Check and clean any pre-motor and post-motor filters (most bagless vacuums have both) — a clogged filter is one of the most common causes of gradually reduced suction, and many are washable; let them dry fully before refitting.
  3. Check the full length of the hose and the floor head/brush bar area for blockages — a sock, hair tie, or ball of fluff lodged partway along the hose can restrict airflow without fully blocking it.
  4. Check the floor head is set to the correct height/carpet setting for your flooring — the wrong setting can make suction feel weak even when the machine itself is working fine.

When to call an engineer

If the bin, filters, and hose are all clear but suction is still weak, a worn seal around the bin or filter housing (letting air bypass instead of pulling through the machine properly) or a failing motor may be the cause — worth a professional check, particularly on a machine that’s a few years old.
