Washing machine door won’t lock or unlock (all brands)

A washing machine door that won’t lock (so the cycle refuses to start) or won’t unlock (so you’re stuck waiting even after the cycle finishes) are two different symptoms of the same part — the door interlock — and both are worth checking safely before assuming the worst.

Door won’t lock / cycle won’t start

• Check the door is genuinely closed fully and squarely, not just resting shut — a slightly ajar door won’t trigger the interlock.
• Check nothing (a stray sock, the edge of clothing) is caught in the door seal preventing a full close.

Door won’t unlock after the cycle

• Most machines have a genuine safety delay of a few minutes after a cycle ends, especially after a hot wash, to let the drum and water cool before unlocking — wait at least 2-3 minutes before assuming it’s stuck.
• Check the machine has actually finished its full cycle and isn’t paused or still mid-programme, which would keep the door locked correctly by design.
• If your model has one, check for an emergency manual release (often a cord or catch accessible from underneath or behind a panel — check your manual) for genuinely stuck situations.

When to call an engineer

If the door won’t lock despite closing properly, or won’t unlock well after a cycle has genuinely finished and any cool-down delay has passed, the door interlock mechanism itself has likely failed — a routine, inexpensive part for an engineer to replace.
