If the drum stays dry, or the machine hums/beeps but doesn’t fill, the cause is almost always upstream of the machine itself: the tap, hose, or the small mesh filters where the inlet hose connects.
What to check first
- Check the tap the machine’s hose connects to is fully open — a partially closed tap is a very common cause after anyone has worked near it (e.g. a plumber, or after moving the machine to clean behind it).
- Turn off the tap and unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine — there’s a small mesh filter inside the connection point that catches grit from the mains supply and clogs over years of use.
- Rinse the mesh filter under a tap to clear trapped limescale and debris, then reconnect.
- Check the hose itself isn’t kinked behind the machine.
- If your machine has a separate cold and hot fill (less common on modern UK machines), check both taps.
When to call an engineer
If the tap, hose, and filter are all clear and it still won’t fill, the water inlet valve (a solenoid valve inside the machine that opens electronically) has likely failed. This is a routine, inexpensive part for an engineer to replace.
