This fault involves gas or mains electrical work. Don't attempt a DIY repair — UK law requires gas work to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Below is what to check and describe to them, not step-by-step repair instructions.
A power indicator light that won’t illuminate, even though the shower might otherwise seem to work, is a useful diagnostic detail — it tells you specifically that the display/indicator circuit isn’t confirming power, which is different from the whole unit being dead.
What’s safe to check yourself
- Check the shower still runs and produces water/heat despite the light being out — if it does, the fault may be isolated to just the indicator bulb or LED rather than the shower’s core function, which is a much lower-priority issue.
- Check the dedicated pull-cord switch (mounted separately, usually on the ceiling or wall) is genuinely switched on, as covered in our “won’t switch on at all” guide.
- Check the consumer unit/fuse box for a tripped breaker on the shower’s dedicated circuit.
If the shower produces no water or heat at all alongside the dead light, treat this the same as our “won’t switch on at all” guide — check the pull-cord and circuit breaker, and if both are fine, this needs a qualified electrician. Don’t open the shower unit casing yourself in any case, even if it’s just the indicator light that seems to be at fault, since diagnosing exactly which circuit has failed requires testing inside a live mains enclosure.
