If one ring on an electric or induction hob doesn’t heat while the others work fine, the fault is usually isolated to that specific zone’s control or element — a useful distinction, since it rules out a wider electrical supply problem.
What’s safe to check yourself
- On induction hobs specifically, check you’re using a pan that’s actually induction-compatible (a magnet should stick to the base) — a non-compatible pan will show no heat at all and is easy to mistake for a fault.
- Check the hob’s control panel isn’t showing a lock symbol — many hobs have a child lock or cleaning lock that can be triggered accidentally and will stop a zone responding.
- Check the pan is properly centred over the zone — some induction hobs are strict about pan placement and won’t heat if it’s significantly off-centre.
- If it’s a ceramic/radiant hob, check for a visible crack in the glass surface over that zone — a cracked hob surface is a safety issue and the hob shouldn’t be used until assessed.
If pan compatibility, locks, and positioning are all ruled out and one zone genuinely won’t heat, the element or its control relay has likely failed — this is mains electrical work inside the hob unit and needs a qualified engineer or electrician, not a DIY repair.
