A degree of low hum from an electric shower’s heating element and internal solenoid valve is normal, but a distinctly loud buzz — especially if it’s new or getting worse — is worth paying attention to.
What’s safe to check yourself
- Check your incoming water flow/pressure hasn’t dropped (see our weak-pressure guide) — some units buzz more noticeably when working against reduced flow, as the internal solenoid valve and heating element cycle differently than at normal pressure.
- Check the shower head and hose for limescale restricting flow, since (as with weak pressure generally) restricted flow can change how the unit’s internal components behave.
- Note whether the buzz is constant throughout use or specifically tied to switching the unit on/off or adjusting temperature — a buzz only during those moments is more likely the solenoid valve operating normally; a constant loud buzz throughout use is more likely to indicate a developing fault.
Beyond checking flow and descaling the shower head (neither of which involves electrical parts), don’t open the shower unit casing. If the buzzing is new, constant, and loud, or paired with any burning smell, stop using the shower and call a qualified electrician — electric showers are a fixed, high-current mains appliance and any internal fault is a genuine safety matter, not just a noise issue.
