A weak or dribbling flow from an electric shower is one of the most common complaints and, unlike most electric shower issues, has several genuinely safe DIY checks — because low flow is nearly always about limescale or blockages, not the electrical heating element.
What to check first
- Unscrew the shower head and check the small flow regulator/spray plate inside for limescale build-up blocking the holes — soak it in descaler or diluted white vinegar and scrub gently with an old toothbrush.
- Check the hose isn’t kinked, and check the small filter/mesh where the hose connects to the shower unit (not the electrical part — this is usually accessible without touching anything live) for trapped debris or limescale.
- Check whether flow is weak on both hot and cold settings or worsens specifically as the temperature/power dial is turned up — electric showers reduce flow automatically at higher heat settings to maintain water temperature, so some reduction at max heat is normal, not a fault.
- Check your home’s general water pressure by comparing to a cold tap elsewhere — if pressure is low throughout the house, that’s a wider plumbing/supply issue, not specific to the shower.
When to call an engineer
If the shower head, hose, and general house pressure are all fine but flow through the unit itself is still weak, the shower’s internal solenoid valve or filter (which does sit near electrical components) may be restricted — this is where DIY should stop and a qualified electrician or plumber should take over.
