Water leaking or overflowing during the wash stage of a washer-dryer is the same core troubleshooting as a standalone washing machine leak, since the wash function works identically — the drying side isn’t involved in this particular symptom.
What to check first
- Check you’re not overdosing detergent — excess suds can force their way past the door seal, and this is one of the most common causes of an apparent “leak” that’s actually foam escaping.
- Check the door seal for a build-up of debris or damage preventing a full seal, as covered in our washing machine door-leak guide.
- Check the load isn’t overloaded for the wash stage specifically, which can stop the door compressing the seal evenly.
- Check the drain hose connection at the back isn’t loose, and that it’s positioned at the correct height per your manual — a drain hose fitted incorrectly can sometimes siphon or overflow.
When to call an engineer
If detergent dose, door seal, and load size are all fine but leaking continues, a supply hose connection, the door seal itself, or an internal component may have failed — worth a professional check, and worth turning off the water supply to the machine in the meantime if the leak is significant.
