Washer-dryer won’t complete the spin stage (all brands)
✅ Safe to check yourself
This is a common, low-risk check most people can do safely. Always unplug the appliance (or isolate power) before touching internal parts.
A washer-dryer that washes and rinses normally but won’t spin (or spins only briefly before stopping) shares the same likely causes as a standalone washing machine — this is a wash-function symptom, not related to the drying side of the machine.
What to check first
- Check the load isn’t heavily unbalanced — most machines will refuse to complete a spin, or repeatedly attempt and abandon it, if the load is too unevenly distributed, as a safety measure.
- Check the drain filter and hose aren’t blocked (see our drainage guides) — many machines won’t spin at all if they haven’t fully drained first, since spinning with water still in the drum would be unsafe.
- Check the door is closing and latching fully, since the door lock needs to be confirmed before a spin cycle will run.
- Try selecting a spin-only cycle on an empty or rebalanced load to isolate whether the issue is specifically about this load, or affects spinning generally.
When to call an engineer
If load balance, drainage, and the door are all fine but spinning still won’t complete, worn suspension components, a failing motor, or a carbon brush issue (on brushed motors) may be the cause — worth a professional diagnosis.
