Washer-dryer washes fine but won’t dry properly (Hotpoint & Indesit)

This is a common, low-risk check most people can do safely. Always unplug the appliance (or isolate power) before touching internal parts.
Combined washer-dryers share the drum between both functions, so a machine that washes perfectly well but leaves clothes damp after the “dry” stage often has a fault isolated to the drying-specific parts — the condenser system, vent, or temperature sensor for drying — not the whole machine. On Hotpoint/Indesit machines, drying-specific faults typically show as F13, F14, or F15.
What to check first
- Reduce the load size significantly for drying — washer-dryers have much less drying capacity than their wash capacity (often half), and overloading the drying stage is one of the most common causes of “still damp” results.
- Check the condenser drying filter/unit (separate from the wash detergent drawer, check your manual for its exact location) isn’t clogged with fluff — this needs periodic cleaning just like a standalone condenser tumble dryer.
- Check the door seal is clean and sealing fully during the dry stage, same as for a washing machine wash cycle.
- Try a shorter wash-only load followed by a separate drying-only cycle rather than a full combined programme, to see if drying alone still underperforms.
When to call an engineer
If a reduced load and clean filters don’t help, and especially if you see F13-F15 codes specifically, the drying thermostat, heating element, or condenser fan may need replacing — this is mains electrical work inside the appliance and needs a professional.
