If washing is quiet but the machine becomes noticeably louder or vibrates more once it switches to drying, the cause is usually related to load size and balance for the drying stage specifically, since drying tumbles the load differently to washing.
What to check first
- Reduce the load size for drying — as covered in our “won’t dry properly” guide, washer-dryers can typically dry only about half of what they can wash, and an overloaded drum tumbles unevenly, causing extra noise and vibration.
- Check the machine’s feet are still level and firmly on the floor — vibration during drying can gradually work adjustable feet loose over time even if they were fine when installed.
- Check for anything caught between the drum and the door seal, same as with a standalone tumble dryer.
- Make sure the drying programme selected matches the fabric type — some fast/high-heat drying settings tumble more vigorously than gentler settings.
When to call an engineer
If load size and levelling don’t help and the noise/vibration is new rather than always having been there, drum bearings or the condenser fan may be involved — the same wear parts that affect standalone tumble dryers apply here too.
