This is a common, low-risk check most people can do safely. Always unplug the appliance (or isolate power) before touching internal parts.
A washer-dryer that pauses mid-programme and won’t progress, without a clear error code, is often the machine waiting on a condition it can’t meet — usually water level, drainage, or door lock status — rather than being fully broken.
What to check first
- Check the water supply tap is fully open — a combined machine’s dry stage can’t begin until the wash/rinse stages complete properly, so a water supply issue earlier in the cycle can cause an apparent “stuck” state later.
- Check the drain filter and hose (see our drainage guides) — if draining is incomplete, many machines will pause rather than proceed to spin or dry.
- Check the door is fully latched — some machines will pause indefinitely if the door lock sensor loses confidence the door is secure, even mid-cycle.
- Note the display/light pattern exactly, including anything flashing, before you do anything else — this is the single most useful piece of information for a call-out.
When to call an engineer
If drainage, water supply and the door are all fine and the machine still won’t progress or complete a cycle, it’s likely a sensor or control board fault — worth a professional diagnosis rather than repeated cancelling and restarting, which can sometimes make intermittent faults harder to reproduce for an engineer.
